Let me give you a reason to lift your head tonight. Right now, at this very moment, there is a living Priest at the right hand of God praying for you by name. Not one who died and passed the robe to a successor: one who never dies. Hear it:
“Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.” (Hebrews 7:25, KJV)
“To the uttermost”: completely, not barely
The old priests kept dying, so the line kept changing hands (Hebrews 7:23–24). Not this One. Because “he ever liveth,” His priesthood never ends, and that is exactly why He can “save… to the uttermost.” That phrase does not mean barely saved, scraping in at the last second, child of God. It means completely, all the way through. He does not merely start your salvation and leave you to finish it; He carries it to the end. “I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand” (John 10:28); “there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1).
Two ministries you need to hold together
Now here is the balance many believers miss. His priestly work has two parts. There is the sacrifice, offered once and finished: “this he did once, when he offered up himself” (Hebrews 7:27). And there is the intercession, going on right now: “he ever liveth to make intercession.” Hold only the finished sacrifice and you may wonder if God is still paying you any attention; hold only the ongoing prayer and you may wonder if the price was ever fully paid. You need both: the debt is paid in full, and the Saviour is praying still. “It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again… who also maketh intercession for us” (Romans 8:34).
So your prayer is not a long-distance call
That changes how you pray. Prayer is not you trying to get a distant God’s attention: it is you joining the intercession your High Priest is already making. “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace” (Hebrews 4:16); “casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” (1 Peter 5:7). Bring Him everything (your fears, your family, your failures), because your confidence never rested on how well you pray. It rests on the One who ever liveth to pray for you. Glory to God.
