Bible Outline • Psalm 103:1-6 (KJV)

David calls his whole soul to bless the LORD, remembers every benefit beginning with forgiveness, and rests in the God who always does right.

This teaching comes from the King James Bible, and every verse I quote is from the KJV.

These are my own convictions from the Word of God, shared through The Prevailing Word of God ministry, and they do not speak for any local church.

Primary Text

Psalm 103:1-6 (KJV)

Main Idea

Bless the LORD with your whole heart, because He forgives, redeems, and cares for His people, and He always does what is right.

I. Bless the LORD With Your Whole Soul (vv. 1-2)

Prescriptive

“Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:”

Psalm 103:1-2, KJV

David speaks to his own soul and calls his whole being to praise the LORD. He also warns himself not to forget what God has done.

Supporting Scriptures

Descriptive

“I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”

Psalm 34:1, KJV

Praise is a continual habit, not a rare event.

Prescriptive

“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.”

Mark 12:30, KJV

God commands love from the whole person, with heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Prescriptive

“Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.”

Deuteronomy 6:12, KJV

Forgetting what God has done is a real danger for His people.

II. Remember What the LORD Has Done (vv. 3-5)

Descriptive

“Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”

Psalm 103:3-5, KJV

Forgiveness is the first benefit David names. God also heals, redeems, crowns, satisfies, and renews His people. Healing in this life rests in God’s hands and timing, and the full healing of the body comes at the resurrection (Philippians 3:21).

Supporting Scriptures

Descriptive

“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;”

Ephesians 1:7, KJV

Forgiveness comes through the blood of Jesus Christ, according to the riches of God’s grace.

Descriptive

“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”

Isaiah 53:5, KJV

Jesus Christ bore the punishment that brings us peace with God. Peter applies these words to the healing of sin (1 Peter 2:24).

Descriptive

“For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.”

Psalm 107:9, KJV

The same God who satisfies with good things in Psalm 103:5 fills the hungry soul.

III. Trust the LORD Who Does Right (v. 6)

Descriptive

“The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.”

Psalm 103:6, KJV

The LORD sees every wrong done to the oppressed, and He acts with perfect justice.

Supporting Scriptures

Descriptive

“Which executeth judgment for the oppressed: which giveth food to the hungry. The LORD looseth the prisoners:”

Psalm 146:7, KJV

The LORD Himself takes up the cause of the oppressed.

Descriptive

“He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.”

Deuteronomy 32:4, KJV

Every one of God’s ways is just and right.

Prescriptive

“Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”

Romans 12:19, KJV

Believers are commanded to leave vengeance to God.

Closing

Bless the LORD today with your whole soul. Remember that David’s list of benefits begins with forgiveness, which comes through Jesus Christ. Then rest in the God who always does what is right.

Deuteronomy 6:12; 32:4; Psalm 34:1; 103:1-7; 107:9; 146:7; Isaiah 53:5; Mark 12:30; Acts 8:32-35; Romans 12:19; Ephesians 1:7; Philippians 3:21; 1 Peter 2:24.

Salvation is only through a personal relationship with God the Father by grace through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. At the moment of faith in Jesus Christ, the believer is instantly and permanently indwelt by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit regenerates, seals, leads, guides, empowers, and sanctifies the believer in their walk with God.

Prescriptive

“And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

2 Corinthians 5:18-21, KJV
