I. The Biblical Order of Faith, Salvation, and Baptism

• Baptism is a commanded, joyful act of obedience — but the water did not save, regenerate, or cleanse.
• The New Testament pattern: the gospel is preached → heard → believed → the saving promise received by faith → baptized as believers.
• A. Jesus Was Not Baptized to Become Saved — His baptism fulfilled all righteousness; it was not for forgiveness (Matthew 3:14–15).
• B. Matthew 28 Commands the Baptism of Disciples — make disciples, then baptize them; a command is not the means of justification (Matthew 28:19).

II. Salvation and Cleansing Come Through Christ and His Blood

• Forgiveness, redemption, and cleansing are assigned to the blood of Christ — never to baptismal water.
• Matthew 26:28; Ephesians 1:7; 1 John 1:7; Revelation 1:5; 5:9; 12:11.
• 1 Peter 3:21 defines baptism as “an appeal to God for a good conscience,” not the removal of dirt from the flesh.

III. Important Greek Words

• A. Believe — pisteuō: to trust, rely on, and place confidence in Christ (John 3:15).
• B. Baptize — baptizō: to immerse; it does not mean to justify, regenerate, or cleanse the soul.
• C. Condemned — katakrinō: to pronounce guilty; Mark 16:16 ties condemnation to unbelief, not to a lack of baptism.

IV. Mark 16:16 Must Be Read as a Complete Statement

• The second half names the cause of condemnation: “the one who has not believed” — not “has not been baptized.”
• A. John 3:14–18 — judgment rests on not believing in the Son.
• B. John 3:36 — the one who believes in the Son has eternal life.
• C. John 5:24 — the believer has passed from death into life.
• D. John 6:40 — eternal life is attached to faith in the Son.

V. The Conversion Accounts Show That Baptism Followed Faith

• A. Pentecost — those who received the word were baptized (Acts 2:41).
• B. The Samaritans — believed the gospel, then were baptized (Acts 8:12).
• C. The Ethiopian Eunuch — baptized after hearing the gospel (Acts 8:35).
• D. Paul — “calling on His name” is faith; justified by faith (Acts 22:16; Romans 10:13; 3:28; 5:1).
• E. Lydia — the Lord opened her heart; baptism followed (Acts 16:14).
• F. The Philippian Jailer — “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:30–31).
• G. Crispus and the Corinthians — listened, believed, were baptized (Acts 18:8).
• H. Cornelius — received the Holy Spirit before water baptism; hearts cleansed by faith (Acts 10:43–48; 15:9).
• I. The Ephesian Disciples — a water ceremony is not enough; faith in Christ is essential (Acts 19).

VI. Supporting Scriptures

• Matthew 26:28 — Christ’s blood was poured out for the forgiveness of sins.
• John 3:14–18 — Eternal life belongs to the one who believes; condemnation rests upon unbelief.
• John 3:36 — The one who believes in the Son has eternal life.
• John 5:24 — The believer has passed from death into life.
• John 6:40 — Everyone who believes in the Son will have eternal life.
• Acts 2:41 — Those who received the Word were baptized.
• Acts 8:12 — The Samaritans believed the gospel and were baptized.
• Acts 10:43–48 — Cornelius received the Holy Spirit before water baptism.
• Acts 15:9 — God cleansed their hearts by faith.
• Acts 16:30–31 — “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.”
• Acts 18:8 — The Corinthians heard, believed, and were baptized.
• Romans 3:28 — A person is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.
• Romans 5:1 — We are justified by faith and have peace with God through Christ.
• Ephesians 1:7 — Redemption and forgiveness come through Christ’s blood.
• Ephesians 2:8–9 — Salvation is by grace through faith, not the result of works.
• First John 1:7 — The blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin.
• Revelation 1:5 — Jesus released us from our sins by His blood.
• Revelation 5:9 — Christ purchased people for God with His blood.
• Revelation 12:11 — Believers overcome because of the blood of the Lamb.

VII. Final Biblical Conclusion

• Baptism is commanded, important, and a public confession — but it does not regenerate, justify, remove guilt, or complete salvation.
• Jesus completed redemption on the cross; His blood forgives; His resurrection guarantees eternal life.
• Salvation is by grace through faith in Christ; the Holy Spirit indwells the believer at the moment of saving faith.
