Where do you find hope when everything around you has fallen apart?

Jerusalem lay in ruins. The temple was gone. The judgment was deserved. Out of that wreckage the writer of Lamentations says, “This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.” In under three minutes this short message walks through the three truths he recalled.

1. Hope begins with remembering the right thing

In verses 19 and 20 the writer remembers his affliction, the wormwood and the gall, and his soul sinks. In verse 21 he turns. He stops rehearsing the loss and starts remembering the LORD. Psalm 77:11 says it the same way: “I will remember the works of the LORD.” Hope is not a feeling that arrives. It is a truth you call to mind on purpose.

2. His mercies keep us from being consumed

A remnant lived when the city fell, and verse 22 gives the only reason: “It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed.” Malachi 3:6 says why that mercy can be relied on: “I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” We are not spared because we earned it. We are spared because He is merciful.

3. His mercies are new every morning, because great is His faithfulness

Yesterday’s mercy is not asked to carry today. Each morning the LORD supplies fresh mercy for that day, and He does it because He is faithful. Hebrews 10:23 says, “he is faithful that promised.” Your hope is only as strong as the One you hope in, and His faithfulness is great.

Verse 24 gives the response: “The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.” Whatever you woke up to this morning, His mercies woke up with you. Recall that to your mind, and hope again.
