There is a teaching going around that your words have their own creative power: speak it and you frame your world, command wealth, command healing. Let me put the brakes on that with Scripture, because words matter enormously, just not for the reason that teaching says.
“…for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” (Matthew 12:34, KJV)
The setting: words spoken against the Lord Jesus
Read Matthew 12 from verse 22 and you will see why the Lord Jesus said this. He had just healed a man who was blind and dumb and possessed with a devil. The people were amazed, but the Pharisees said Jesus Christ cast out devils “by Beelzebub the prince of the devils” (Matthew 12:24). Their words exposed what was in their hearts.
So the Lord Jesus answered with a picture from the orchard. “Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit” (Matthew 12:33). Then He said it plainly: “O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things?” (Matthew 12:34). Words are fruit. The heart is the tree.
Only God speaks worlds into being
Creative power in speech belongs to God alone. “God said, Let there be light: and there was light” (Genesis 1:3), because He is the sovereign Creator, and you are not. You cannot speak reality into existence, command your future, or force God’s hand with the right words. That is not faith, child of God; that is a counterfeit.
The verse often used to teach otherwise actually says the opposite. “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God” (Hebrews 11:3). The worlds were framed by God’s word, and faith understands it. Proverbs 18:21 is quoted the same way: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” Read in its setting, that proverb teaches that our speech brings real consequences on ourselves and others. It never says our words create reality.
Your mouth is a window into your heart
Here is what your words actually do: they reveal you. “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” Your speech is the overflow: the evidence of what is really inside. “A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things” (Matthew 12:35). Sinful words do not come from careless slips; they come from the heart. That is why the Lord Jesus warns:
“But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” (Matthew 12:36–37, KJV)
The word “idle” describes careless, empty speech, words spoken without thought for God. In the day of judgment, words will be evidence. They show whether the heart was ever changed by God.
Words carry real weight
And words carry real weight, not mystical, but moral and relational. The tongue “is a fire” (James 3:6), and “the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3:8). Words can wound or heal: “There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health” (Proverbs 12:18). So Paul tells believers, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers” (Ephesians 4:29).
Even the confession that goes with salvation begins in the heart. “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:10). The mouth confesses Jesus Christ as Lord because the heart has already believed on Him. The words do not save. They declare the faith in Jesus Christ that God has given.
So the cure is a new heart, not a new formula
So how do you fix your mouth? You do not manage the mouth: you let God change the heart it flows from. David knew it: “Create in me a clean heart, O God” (Psalm 51:10). And God promised to do exactly that: “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 36:26).
That new heart is not a self-improvement project. It is the work of God in everyone who is saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17). Clean the spring, and the water runs clean. Glory to God.
