Part 3 of 12 · Salvation in Jesus Christ: The New Testament Witness to Grace, Faith, and the Blood
At the Last Supper, Jesus Christ explained what His coming death would mean.
“For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” (Matthew 26:28, KJV)
Mark records the same cup, “my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many” (Mark 14:24), and Luke records it as “the new testament in my blood” (Luke 22:20).
This is the foundation. Jesus Christ Himself tied the remission of sins and the new covenant to His own shed blood.
Peter sat at that table. He heard those words from the mouth of the Lord. So it makes no sense to read Acts 2:38 as if Peter later traded the blood of Jesus Christ for baptismal water as the payment for sin.
The rest of the New Testament agrees. Paul writes that we are “justified by his blood” (Romans 5:9). He also writes of Jesus Christ, “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins” (Ephesians 1:7). Hebrews says, “without shedding of blood is no remission” (Hebrews 9:22).
John adds, “the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). In heaven the redeemed sing to the Lamb, “thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood” (Revelation 5:9).
The New Testament could not be clearer. The remission of sins rests on the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. His blood purchased our redemption. The sinner receives those blessings through faith in Jesus Christ.
Water baptism bears witness to that finished work. It never takes its place.

“And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
2 Corinthians 5:18-21 (KJV)
