Let me settle this once for all, child of God, and I do not have to lean on one disputed verse to do it. The Trinity does not rest on a single proof text: it rests on the whole New Testament. Hold four truths together, because Scripture holds them together: there is one God; the Father is God; the Son is God; the Holy Ghost is God; and the three are personally distinct. Watch how the Book says every part of it.
One God: always
We are not preaching three gods, and we never have. “The LORD our God is one LORD” (Deuteronomy 6:4). “There is none other God but one… But to us there is but one God, the Father… and one Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 8:4, 6). One God: settle that first.
The Father is God, the Son is God, the Spirit is God
The Father is God: none dispute it. The Son is God: “the Word was God” (John 1:1); Thomas cried, “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28); “in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 2:9); and the Father says to the Son, “Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever” (Hebrews 1:8). And the Holy Ghost is God: when Ananias lied to the Spirit, Peter said, “thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God” (Acts 5:4). Lie to the Spirit, and you have lied to God, because the Spirit is God.
Three: distinct, together
And they are not one Person wearing three masks. At the Jordan, all three at once: the Son in the water, the Spirit descending, the Father speaking (Matthew 3:16–17). One command carries all three: “baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 28:19): one name, singular, and three named in it; three gods will not fit that sentence, and neither will one Person. And Paul blesses the church by all three: “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost” (2 Corinthians 13:14).
So here is the whole of it, plain: There is one God. The Father is God. The Son is God. The Holy Ghost is God. The Father is not the Son; the Son is not the Holy Ghost; the Holy Ghost is not the Father, and the God of Scripture remains one God. That is not a riddle; that is the God who made you and saves you. Glory to God.
